Web Consultant
Institution: Visions in Action
I volunteered for one year in Arusha, Tanzania with a NGO based in Washington DC called Visions in Action. I helped non-profit organizations to set up web-based content management solutions to extend their reach on various stakeholders such as the Members of Parliament (MP), sister organizations, and donors.
More specifically, I set up the following sites:
- Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) is a portal about natural resources. The site contains already thousands of references in its electronic library and can count on the support of hundred of already registered members.
- Arusha NGO Network (ANGONET) is a collaborative platform among the registered NGOs of the region of Arusha. Each organization can be registered for free and update related pieces of information such as mission statement, current projects, or events. Already more than 70 organizations have registered.
- Policy Forum (PF) is an informative and advocacy website about governmental policies.
All the solutions are based on an open-source content-management system (CMS) called Drupal. Most of the implemented websites integrate bilingual features (English and Swahili), and have also been designed for systems with low bandwidth and deprecated browsers, an important requirement to fulfill in countries such as Tanzania.
As part of my consulting work, I also organized accessibility studies and seminars in order to target more precisely the users of the sites. In addition, I provided on-site training sessions throughout the region of Arusha.
